data Artisans is excited to announce the second-annual Apache Flink user survey. We’re calling on all members of the Flink and stream processing community to give their input and to help to shape the future of Flink.
The survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete and is available here.
All questions are optional, and we appreciate any feedback that you’re willing to provide. The survey will be open until Monday, November 27.
2016’s survey (see part 1 and part 2 of last year’s post-survey report) represented the first community-wide collection of feedback from Flink users, and we gained valuable insights about user priorities and pain points that helped us to improve Flink.
Here are a few of the key takeaways from 2016:
We’re eager to see 2017’s responses from Flink’s fast-growing user base and to understand how usage has changed in the past year. We’ll once again publish a report with a summary of findings at the conclusion of the survey.
All responses will remain confidential, and only aggregate statistics will be shared. Respondents will be eligible to win one of 10 tickets to Flink Forward 2018 with your choice of the second-annual San Francisco event on April 9-10 or the Berlin event on September 3-5.
We look forward to your feedback.

Here are a few of the key takeaways from 2016:
- The Flink community is a global one: While 27% of respondents were based in the United States (the country with the highest proportion of respondents), more than 21 different countries were represented in the survey.
- Both the DataStream and DataSet APIs are used heavily: 91% of respondents reported using Flink’s DataStream API, and another 55% use the DataSet API
- In 2016, operating Flink jobs in production presented challenges: When ranking biggest challenges with Flink, 44% of respondents who ranked “Management and maintenance of long-running Flink jobs” as a challenge listed it as their #1 challenge.
- Well over half of Flink users are satisfied with the framework: 70% of respondents were either “Completely Satisfied” or “Very Satisfied” with Flink.
